Teacher work bags need to carry the actual items that travel between school and home. A laptop label alone does not tell you whether a bag will also fit a charger, planner, lunch container and teaching materials in the arrangement you want. Start with that load, then compare the bag's carry format and listed compartment measurements.
This guide compares two related Targus Avila designs: the standard Tote, model TBA00102GL in Midnight, and the Convertible Tote/Backpack, model TBB65102GL in Midnight. They are general work bags considered here for teacher use, not products we have tested in a classroom. Manufacturer descriptions, measurements and a clearly attributed customer comment inform the comparison.

Both pages describe a laptop cradle with a magnetic closure and water-resistant fabric. Water-resistant does not mean waterproof. The manufacturer uses a 15–16-inch product label, but compare the physical dimensions of your device and its case with the actual listed compartment measurements. Thickness and the space taken by other belongings still matter.
1. Avila Tote: a horizontal work-bag format

Check TBA00102GL on Amazon.com →
The TBA00102GL Avila Tote has double carry handles and a 13-liter listed capacity. Targus describes a zippered main compartment, one interior zipped pocket and four slip pockets, with a magnetic closure on the protective laptop cradle. Its page also describes a trolley strap for use with rolling luggage.
Why consider it: The wider, lower outer shape may suit a teacher who wants a conventional tote carried by hand, on the arm or over the shoulder. Before buying, lay out the objects you actually bring home and consider whether that horizontal arrangement matches how you want to reach them during the day.
Limitations: This model does not list the convertible backpack straps found on the other Avila bag compared here. Targus lists the empty tote at 1.14 lb, while the checked Amazon detail field says 1.25 lb. Confirm the current weight if that difference matters. Its empty weight also tells you nothing about how a full teaching-day load will feel. Do not treat the 13-liter number as proof that a particular stack of books or lunch container will fit alongside the laptop.
A customer comment, with context: On Targus's product page, reviewer Mdavis0526 wrote, “There are also tons of pockets.” That is one customer's opinion about the bag, not our testing or a substitute for checking the actual pocket layout. We have not verified purchase status for this reviewer and do not infer how the bag will work for every teacher.
A school-day packing check: List the laptop, charger, planner and other items that must travel together. Compare their measurements with the stated compartments, then check whether the pockets suit their shapes. Do not rely only on the screen-size label or a favorable fit comment from another customer.
Choose it when: You want a conventional tote and its layout fits your everyday work materials without needing a backpack carry option.
2. Avila Convertible Tote/Backpack: two carry formats

Check TBB65102GL on Amazon.com →
The TBB65102GL Avila Convertible changes from a backpack to a tote using tuckaway shoulder straps. Targus lists a magnetic laptop-cradle closure, a zippered main compartment, one interior zipped pocket and four slip pockets. Its outer dimensions are taller and narrower than the standard tote's listed dimensions.
Why consider it: The alternative carry format can matter when a route includes public transit, stairs or moments when you want your hands available. That is a practical format choice, not a claim that this bag prevents pain or that any particular load will be comfortable.
Capacity discrepancy to check: The manufacturer feature list calls the main compartment 12L, while the specification table lists 12.5 liters. We could not resolve that difference from the page. Treat it as approximately a 12–12.5-liter advertised design and confirm current specifications if a precise capacity affects the purchase.
Limitations: A convertible format does not make the bag larger than the standard tote. Its listed empty weight is 1.34 lb, compared with 1.14 lb for the tote. The nominal 15–16-inch label also does not override the listed laptop compartment of 14.13 × 9.96 inches. Measure the actual device and any protective case.
A route check: Think through the trip from home to the classroom. Decide when you would use the handles and when you would use backpack straps. Confirm the current product's strap arrangement in the photographs and instructions rather than assuming every Avila design converts in the same way.
Choose it when: The second carry format is useful enough to justify choosing the taller shape and managing the convertible straps.
How to compare teacher work bags before ordering
Use device measurements rather than screen size alone
A screen diagonal does not describe the full laptop body. Compare the device's width, height and thickness, including any case, with the current compartment information. The two Avila pages provide similar but not identical laptop-compartment measurements. Where a dimension or orientation is unclear, ask the seller or manufacturer before relying on the fit.
Plan for the full daily load
Write a must-carry list and a separate occasional-items list. A bag that suits a laptop and planner may not suit a day with several heavy books and bulky classroom materials. The manufacturer weights in this guide are for the bags themselves, not tested carrying capacities or recommended loads.
Check the closure you actually need
Both pages describe a zippered main compartment and a magnetic laptop-cradle closure. Those are separate closures. Check the photographs and current contents to understand which space each one secures. Do not assume that all interior pockets zip or that the bag provides a sealed waterproof enclosure.
Match the color and exact model
This comparison uses Midnight versions TBA00102GL and TBB65102GL. Other colors and related Avila designs may have different model numbers. Check the selected Amazon variation before ordering so that a change of color or style does not silently change the bag being compared.
Questions before buying
Is the convertible bag the larger option?
Not according to the captured manufacturer capacity fields. The standard Tote is listed at 13 liters; the Convertible has a 12L feature description and a 12.5-liter specification entry. Different outer shapes can still suit different objects, so use measurements rather than assuming the backpack option carries more.
Does the customer comment prove durability or laptop fit?
No. The quoted comment is a single manufacturer-hosted customer's opinion about pockets. It does not establish long-term performance, fit for your device or an independent classroom test. Check the current product information and care directions for your intended use.
Are these bags waterproof?
The manufacturer describes water-resistant fabric, not a waterproof enclosure. Do not extend that claim to submerged use, leakproof storage or complete protection in heavy rain. Choose storage and handling for the conditions you actually expect.
For organizing the paper materials that travel between home and school, compare our classroom paper organizers. Check the intended folder sizes against the actual bag dimensions before combining supplies.
