A picture scramble can help children check the order of letters in a word. Start with the target word in print and use the picture as a second check after children have read the pieces.
At a glance
Build the word left to right, then see whether the picture lines up.
1. Read the focus word
Say the word and point to its letters. Highlight a part students already know.
2. Lay out the strips
Give children only the strips for one word. Offer pre-cut pieces if cutting is not the lesson goal.
3. Build from the first letter
Place the first strip under the model. Compare one position at a time.
4. Check the picture
Look at the join between strips. If a piece is out of place, check the printed letters before moving it.
5. Try the word away from the puzzle
Read it in another line or rebuild it with letter tiles. Use the practice sheet when writing is part of the lesson.
A classroom example
In a fictional group, Sol fits two picture strips but reads the letters in reverse order. His partner points to the model’s first letter, and Sol moves the strips and rereads the word.
