A Christmas flip book gives young readers a familiar sentence start and a reason to read every new ending. Use one book at a time and let students look at the print before checking the picture.
At a glance
Read the sentence starter and ending together. Revisit the focus word in a different sentence.
1. Preview the focus word
Show it alone and in the opening line. Ask students to point to the matching print.
2. Read the first ending
Read the complete sentence and discuss the picture. Keep a finger under the words if the reader loses their place.
3. Lift a flap and reread
Ask what changed. Give children time to find the repeated word before they read the whole line.
4. Record one sentence
Trace the focus word or copy a sentence on the recording sheet. Keep the book available as a model.
5. Check the word in new print
Use a different line with the same word. Ask students to find it and read it with less help.
A classroom example
In a fictional class, Nia says the first ending again after lifting the next flap. Her teacher asks her to look at the new words. Nia points under the print and reads the changed sentence.
Companion printable
The printable includes nine mini-books with five illustrated endings each, full-color and black-and-white versions, and matching recording sheets.
