A small Christmas word booklet can help children go from recognizing a picture to using its label in a sentence. Choose a few words that fit the lesson and give children time to say them before copying.
At a glance
Select the words you need, then practice looking up and using one word in a new sentence.
1. Choose a short word set
Pick words for a current story or writing task. Include the optional Nativity terms when they fit the lesson.
2. Name the picture and read the label
Ask what a child sees and read the printed word. Point to the letter sequence.
3. Trace or copy a small number of words
Give children time to finish a few entries. Offer a model or a shorter writing turn when helpful.
4. Use the word in a message
Ask for a label, caption, or sentence that uses the word. Let children rehearse it with a partner.
5. Assemble and revisit
Collect selected pages as a booklet. Keep it near the writing center for another lesson.
A classroom example
In a fictional group, Ali finds a picture for ornament and uses the label in a sentence about his drawing. The next day he opens the booklet and finds the same word independently.
