An illustrated Nativity booklet can connect letter sounds with picture words when the Christian Christmas story fits the lesson. Name each picture first, then use its printed word and letters to practice listening.
At a glance
Say the picture word, listen to its first sound, and match the capital and lowercase letters.
1. Introduce the page in context
Read the short sentence and name the picture. Explain any unfamiliar word before the sound task.
2. Listen to the beginning
Repeat the word slowly and ask children to hear its first sound. Give a second example when the vowel sound differs.
3. Find both letter forms
Show the capital and lowercase pair. Let children point, match, or paste the forms after checking them.
4. Reread the line
Read the sentence with the letter and picture in view. Let children color a detail afterward.
5. Try another picture word
Say a new word with the same initial sound. Ask which letter it might use.
A classroom example
In a fictional group, Lee names an unfamiliar picture differently. His teacher gives the word used on the page, then says it again. Lee hears the first sound and selects the matching letters.
Companion printable
The booklet includes illustrated A–Z sound pages with simple sentences, cut-and-paste letters, and two identical half-pages per sheet.
