A Christmas word hunt helps children find and read words in more than one place. Model the full routine before placing cards around the room, and make the same activity available at a table.
At a glance
Start with a few cards, match each picture on the recording sheet, and reread the words afterward.
1. Choose familiar words
Edit the cards with words children have practiced. Check the print layout and the final list before printing.
2. Show one complete turn
Read a card, match its picture on the sheet, and record the word. Let the group help you check the letters.
3. Set out accessible cards
Place cards at a comfortable height. Offer a seated tray with the same cards for children who need it.
4. Compare the copied word
Look back at the card and touch the letters in order. Correct a mismatch before moving to the next clue.
5. Read a word outside the hunt
Show a word on its own or in a short sentence. Note which words need another reading lesson.
A classroom example
In a fictional class, Dana writes a word beside the wrong picture. Her teacher has her match the pictures first. Dana moves the word to the right spot and rereads it.
