A short editing lesson helps children see what makes a sentence readable. Model one repair in a Christmas sentence, then ask students to use the same check on a new line.
At a glance
Read the original, repair one feature, and compare the two versions aloud.
1. Read the line
Make sure children understand the sentence before they edit it. Point to the start and end.
2. Check the capital
Model finding the first word and changing the first letter if needed.
3. Check word boundaries
Tap once for each spoken word and look for spaces in print. Use a finger spacer during rewriting when helpful.
4. Choose an ending mark
Read the line again and decide what it says or asks. Add a mark that fits.
5. Reread and explain
Ask children to show one change and explain what it helped the reader see.
A classroom example
In a fictional class, Anya adds a period after a question. Her teacher asks her to read the line aloud and notice what it asks. Anya changes the mark and rereads it.
