A five-step drawing can get children started on a Christmas picture they can describe in writing. Model one change at a time and leave room for each child to add an individual detail.
At a glance
Draw in short steps and use a spoken sentence to move from art to writing.
1. Preview the subject
Look at the model and name two parts. Ask children which part they expect to draw first.
2. Model one step slowly
Keep the finished step visible while children add it. Wait before moving on to the next stroke.
3. Offer a starting shape
Give a partial outline or larger drawing space if needed. Invite children to complete one feature at a time.
4. Let children add a detail
Ask what else belongs in their picture. Offer a choice to draw, color, or label a feature.
5. Write one line about the picture
Have children tell a partner their line first. Use guided writing or dictation according to the lesson.
A classroom example
In a fictional group, Ree adds a window behind a Christmas drawing. Her teacher asks what someone can see through it. Ree writes a sentence about the falling snow.
