A number code gives children a reason to look up each letter in order. Start with a word or name they can recognize, then help them read the finished message before trying a longer card.
At a glance
Model one lookup, write one letter per code, and read the whole word afterward.
1. Show the number key
Find the first two-digit code and point to its matching letter. Say the letter name before recording it.
2. Keep the order clear
Work from left to right. Cover later codes if a child loses their place.
3. Check repeated codes
When a number appears again, ask what letter it gave earlier. Use the key to confirm.
4. Read the decoded word
Blend the sounds or read a familiar name after all letters are in place. Check any code that did not fit.
5. Make a short word for a partner
Use the editable card or the letter tiles. Have a partner solve the word and check it against the original.
A classroom example
In a fictional class, Ira writes two different letters for the same number. His partner points to the repeated code. Ira checks the key and repairs the second letter.
