A pumpkin life cycle lesson is easier to follow when children can see the change between two stages. Start with the seed and the fruit, then add the growing stages and show how seeds can begin the cycle again.
At a glance
Use the illustrated book first, sequence pictures together, and then build the circle.
1. Look at a seed and pumpkin
Show the items or clear pictures. Ask what they notice and where they might find seeds.
2. Read the illustrated life cycle
Pause at a few stages and ask what has changed. Name the stage using the poster.
3. Sequence a few pictures
Put two or three stages in order before using the full sequence. Let children move the pictures and explain with a word or gesture.
4. Close the circle
Point from the ripe pumpkin to the seeds inside it. Discuss how those seeds can begin another cycle.
5. Retell using a booklet
Have children label, color, or dictate one stage. Ask them to point to what happens next.
A classroom example
In a fictional class, Lina puts the ripe pumpkin first because it is the one she recognizes. Her teacher sets a seed beside it and rereads the opening page. Lina moves the seed and tells how the plant begins.
