An early reader about Santa getting ready can be used for a short lesson on sequence. Read it together first, then use the illustrations to help children recall what happened and in what order.
At a glance
Preview the pictures, read the story, and use a brief retell at the end.
1. Look at the cover and pictures
Ask what Santa might be getting ready to do. Invite children to point to a clue.
2. Read the story together
Read one page at a time and track the print. Pause to name unfamiliar words.
3. Choose the first event
Look back at the beginning and ask a child to name or point to one thing Santa did.
4. Put two or three events in order
Use the retell activity to arrange events. Let children move pictures or use first and next to tell the order.
5. Share a brief retell
Have a child use the coloring booklet or pictures as a prompt. Reread one page if they want to check.
A classroom example
In a fictional group, Rae names her favorite picture as the first event. Her teacher opens to the first page and asks what Santa was doing there. Rae uses the picture to reorder her retell.
