Different pictures can represent the same number. Use Christmas ornaments to show children how a numeral, word, ten-frame, and other models all connect to one quantity.
At a glance
Choose two numbers and compare each ornament with a set of counters.
1. Name the target number
Point to the numeral or number word. Make a small set of counters to show its quantity.
2. Match the dots
Count the dots and compare them with the counters. Place the ornament on the matching tree.
3. Read tallies and frames
Show how tally marks or filled spaces represent individual items. Count them or group them as children are ready.
4. Compare with fingers
Ask a child to show the number with fingers or point to the illustrated model. Count together if needed.
5. Check one unfamiliar model
Mix two ornaments and ask children to explain which belongs on the tree. Let them use counters for the check.
A classroom example
In a fictional class, Lia matches five dots but misses the five tallies. The teacher sets one counter beside each tally. Lia checks the total and places the ornament on the five tree.
