A gingerbread baking tray gives children a place to put the letters of a sight word in order. Start with a short word from a recent lesson and have the child reread it after placing the final letter.
At a glance
Choose a familiar model, provide the needed tiles, and reread from left to right.
1. Pick a short model word
Choose a word the group has practiced. If you edit the tray, check the print preview and set out enough copies of repeated letters.
2. Read the model aloud
Point to the letters and say the whole word. Notice any part of the spelling the group needs to remember.
3. Place one letter at a time
Find the first matching gingerbread tile and place it in the first spot. Keep the model visible as the child continues.
4. Check the completed word
Compare the tiles with the model and reread. Let the child move a letter before recording.
5. Try a fresh reading example
Read the word again on a card or in a sentence. Use the recording sheet when handwriting fits the lesson.
A classroom example
In a fictional class, Teo builds look with a single o. His teacher asks him to point to each letter on the model. Teo finds a second o tile, places it, and rereads the word.
